New Junior Record set at Canada Cup speed skating competition at the Olympic Ovalfrom Oval.Sunergon.comCanadian
Development Team skater Philippe Riopel, 19, set a new national junior
record in the men’s 500 metres race at today’s Canada Cup #1 speed
skating competition at the Olympic Oval.
“It is pretty exciting. It was Denny
Morrison’s record, and to see what he has done, this is very
motivating,” says Riopel, from Lachenaie, Que. Morrison is one of
Canada’s top speed skaters, with an Olympic silver medal in the team
pursuit event at the 2006 Torino Olympics and the senior Canadian
record holder in the men’s 1,500 metres. His Canadian Junior Record in
the 500 was 35.94.
Today, Riopel’s junior record setting
time of 35.86 earned him a third place finish and shaved .08 seconds
off of Morrison’s record. ”It would be great if I could be skating like
Denny in a few years.”
