Next Saturday, François-Olivier Roberge, a 20-year old Canadian,
will participate in the 1000m race, at his first Olympic Games. Even
though he may not be as experienced as many other skaters, Roberge has
his youth, and admits that each race seems him going faster and faster.
He was barely a second behind world-record holder Shani Davis at the
World Cup in Collalbo, the last competition before the Games.

You got qualified for the Olympic Games at 20, even if youa dmit
that Vancouver was your goal. What are your objectives at your first
Games?
Simply to have my greatest race to date! I've prepared for this day
all year long, and I feel "top shape"! Everything is in place for me to
get my greatest result this season.
How is your Turin experience so far? Did you watch your teammates' races?
Yeah, I went to all of the long track events and to a short track
evening. I love the energy, the atmosphere surrounding the Olympics. I
try to use that energy for myself. I don't know if it's because of it,
but my trainings are going extremely well.
In Collalbo, you showed great progress when you finished twelth
of Group A, you seem to be on an uphill climb. How have you worked with
your coaches to reach that?
The same work I usually do. We didn't change anything, it's sumple
that I'm young and I get better with each apssing race. I gain
experience and confidence, each weekend. I also worked on my openings,
which gives me a lot more speed for all of my 1000m.
How is the Lingotto oval?
I love the place, and the ice is not as bad as we thought. It changes a lot, but I'm used to adapting myself easily.
What are your predictions for the 1000m?
Hum...very hard to say. Shani Davis has been very good all year on
this distance. Joey Cheek has been really strong lately. That's all I
can say, but a lot of guys can hope to win, especially on an ice like
that. The times are all close.
On Saturday, how will you prepare for your 1000m?
The same as each training or race. Stretching, some skating, rest,
skating and I'll be ready. I want to keep smiling and enjoy this day at
its mazimum!
What person have been important in your development as an athlete?
Each and every one of my coaches. They have all brought me a little
something. My parents as well, who have always supported me without
pressuring me, and my teammates, of course!
When did you begin speedskating?
I was 8-years old. My friends and neighbourghs were skating, so I began and kept on doing it.
Have you changed your equipment recently?
I've changed my blades 10 days ago. Turns out it was a very good
choice, because I've never been as fast as I am now, 2 days before my
race.
Do you feel supported by the rest of the Canadian team? What's the atmosphere among its members?
Certainly, the support here is excellent, the staff is very
competent. And there is great energy in the team. Especially since
tonight is the finals of the pursuit, in which everyone thinks we have
good chances.
